When most people think of Texas, they picture cowboys, great barbecue, and sweltering heat. But it’s not all sunburns and brisket out here. Travelers who find themselves in the Lone Star state during the winter are often surprised to see how many great things this big state has to offer. Whether you are entertaining guests or are a traveler yourself, there’s plenty to do during winter in San Antonio. We’ll help you make the most of it.
We’re lucky to avoid the bone-chilling snowstorms and chaos that other states experience during the winter. Instead, we get mild sunshine, festive lights, and plenty of that signature southern hospitality visitors love to receive. We don’t get a lot of winter fatigue here, making it a great place for friends, family, and other visitors to enjoy year-round.
So let’s dive in and see all of the best things to do in San Antonio this winter.
We love hearing from visitors who rave about the mild weather here, even during the depths of winter. There are no harsh conditions, closed roads, or suitcases full of puffy snow jackets. Instead, we have people walking around outdoors, enjoying riverside strolls and afternoons spent on the patio.
Even though the weather remains mild and pleasant, San Antonio sees fewer crowds in the winter. This makes it easier to do touristy stuff without all the hustle and bustle of peak tourist season.
One of the greatest gems in San Antonio is our beautiful River Walk. It’s the perfect way to help your guests get a solid feel for the city. During the winter, festive decorations fill the streets with additional cheer. Be sure to check out the list of events to see if there are any great activities you can bring your guests to get the full San Antonio experience.
Meet at Archie’s Coffee downtown for a little boost and relaxing chat before you set off on the stroll. Our San Antonio coffee shop has everything from classic lattes to plant-based energy drinks and CBD infusions.

It’s hard to narrow down the list, but here are some of the can’t-miss attractions to check out while in San Antonio:
When in Alamo City, you visit the Alamo. Check out this historic place and its role in the fight for our state’s independence while honoring the soldiers who lost their lives. With artifacts, guided tours, and so much more, the Alamo is a must-visit place for anyone checking out San Antonio in the winter.
The Pearl District is another gem for visitors to check out while in San Antonio. A lively dining, shopping, arts, and entertainment hub, the Pearl District is a wonderful place to check out this time of year. Beyond the great shopping and other delights, the Pearl District has some lovely green spaces and even hosts community events and festivals.
More history meets more shopping at Market Square. The three-block outdoor plaza is rich with restaurants and shops and is considered the largest Mexican market in the United States. Check out the old Mexico charm at Market Square, with more than 100 local shops and plenty of sights and sounds to take in.
While the above activities are fabulous choices for San Antonio winter activities, we have a soft spot for cozy indoor options, too. Historic sites like the San Fernando Cathedral and La Villita Historic Arts Village are certainly worth a visit.
Don’t miss out on the many great museums San Antonia has to offer, too. The San Antonio Museum of Art packs in thousands of years of global culture, making it a great option for art and history buffs alike. The Witte Museum is another great choice at the intersection of nature, science, and culture.
Hosting or traveling with kids? Don’t miss out on the San Antonio Zoo, which typically lights up with festive decor during the holiday season. The zoo offers plenty of open spaces and cafes that make it easy to chill out and regroup when needed.
Be sure to pack your mid-winter hoodies before hitting the zoo. Grab a hot chocolate from Archie’s to make it an unforgettable, cozy experience for everyone involved.
No kids involved? No problem. Try an art gallery walk and check out the Southtown First Friday Art Market if the timing lines up. Or you can have a spa day alone or with friends. Top it off with a wine bar or rooftop lounge, or even stop by our San Antonio coffee shop for a delicious, coffee-inspired cocktail.

San Antonio visitors love trying out the Tex-Mex and BBQ, and for good reason. It’s great year-round with warm, comforting foods from across the South.
For BBQ, check out The County Line River Walk or Texas River Bar for a good time. Or visit Acenar, Botanero Lounge, Mezquite, or any of the other great Tex-Mex options we have here in the city.
Hosting tip: Book or reserve ahead where possible to eliminate any stress and long waits. Show your guests just a few options you like and let them pick from a small pool of vetted options, rather than the entire list of restaurants in the city. This can help prevent overwhelm while still giving them the final say.
Looking for a more relaxed, casual option? Come to Archies Coffee! We are open Sunday through Thursday from 7 AM to 7 PM. On Fridays and Saturdays, we’re here from 7 AM until 8 PM at our downtown location.
We offer light and local bites as well as daily fresh pastries and baked goods. You can also follow us on Instagram to see if we have any events or specials going on right now! If you find yourself outside of downtown San Antonio, don’t fret. We also have coffee shops in King William and Med Center, so you can regroup in between activities, no matter where you end up.
With a mild winter climate and festive ambiance, San Antonio is a wonderful place to visit during the winter. Go ahead and invite those loved ones over for a break from the chaos of winter in other cities.
Whether you’re a guest yourself or hosting visitors, be curious and pace the day. Try to get a good mix of local charm and iconic tourist attractions for a well-rounded visit.
For some community-centered local goodness, be sure to visit Archies. Order online for quick pick up and take a moment to relax in one of our three San Antonio coffee shop locations this winter.
