Specialty Coffee Drinks Explained: From Cappuccinos to Flat Whites
Here at Archies, we couldn’t be bigger fans of coffee. From cappuccinos to flat whites, there are nearly endless ways to enjoy your caffeine fix — but we understand that sometimes, all the different kinds of drinks on cafe menus can be downright overwhelming.
That’s why we’re here to break down classic specialty coffee drinks, from the simple americano to the smooth nitro cold brew, so you can order your next coffee with confidence!
Types of specialty coffee drinks
Americano
An americano is made by pouring hot water over one or more espresso shots. The hot water helps to tone down any bitterness, retaining the complex flavors of the espresso but in a lighter way.
Cappuccino
A cappuccino is made with equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. This sophisticated classic is known for its creamy, smooth consistency, with more caffeine and a richer flavor than regular coffee.
Cold Brew
Contrary to popular belief, cold brew is different from iced coffee, which is made by brewing hot coffee and then pouring it over ice. Cold brew is made by steeping coarsely ground coffee beans in water for an extended period of time.
This slow infusion process extracts the coffee’s flavor and caffeine levels, resulting in a smooth, flavorful beverage that sometimes has a sweet aftertaste. Cold brews also use a higher ratio of beans to water than iced coffee.
Espresso
Espresso is a concentrated type of coffee made with roasted beans and an espresso machine. The machine brews coffee with high water pressure and finely ground beans to make a concentrated shot with a top layer of foam, referred to as the “crema.”
You can have an espresso shot (single or double), hot or over ice, for a quick jolt of energy. Espresso can be combined with milk or additional water to make other espresso-based drinks, such as an americano or a latte.
Flat White
A flat white is made with espresso and steamed milk but with a higher ratio of espresso to milk than a latte. The milk is steamed to create a smooth, velvety crema on top. Flat whites tend to be smaller than lattes and don’t have the thick layer of foam that a cappuccino would.
Latte
A latte is made with espresso and milk in a 1:2 ratio, and the milk is steamed to create a thicker layer of foam. Lattes are rich and creamy with a smooth texture and a subtle espresso taste. They often are flavored with vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, or other syrups for additional sweetness.
Macchiato
A macchiato is a variation of a cappuccino without steamed milk, made by adding a small amount of milk froth to the cup before pouring in the espresso. The word “macchiato” is Italian for “marked” or “stained”, which refers to the way the milk is added to the espresso. The milk is spooned over the espresso after it is brewed, creating a layered look.
Mocha
A mocha is made with espresso, steamed milk, and chocolate. Think of it as a blend between a latte and a hot chocolate! They are sweet and rich with a balance of coffee and cocoa flavors.
Nitro Cold Brew
This chilled coffee drink is made by infusing cold brew coffee with nitrogen gas. The nitrogen creates tiny bubbles for a smooth, creamy, and refreshing texture. Nitro cold brew also has a natural sweetness that reduces the bitterness of stronger coffee.
