Sep 5, 2024

There’s something magical about that first sip of Archies coffee in the morning. Our house beans are known for their rich aroma, robust flavor, and comforting warmth. From a simple black coffee to a cold brew, our San Antonio customers come back again and again for the good stuff.

But what if we told you that you could get that same, fine-quality coffee right in your own kitchen?

Making barista-quality coffee at home with our Archies Coffee House Blends is possible with the right methods and techniques. Whether you’re a fan of the bold and full-bodied French press or the clean and consistent drip coffee, there’s a method for everyone. So, grab your favorite roast, and let’s make some amazing coffee at home.

The Basics of Coffee Beans

Choosing the best coffee beans or grounds is the first step to crafting a truly exceptional cup of coffee.

The first thing to look at is the blend of your coffee beans, which refers to the blend of beans coming from a particular geographic region. Consider whether you prefer single-origin or blends.

Single-origin beans offer distinct flavors unique to their specific geographic region while blends combine beans from different regions for a balanced taste profile. At Archies, we have two house blends: one from Central America and the other from South & Central America.

Next, there’s the roast level – light, medium, and dark. This refers to how much the coffee beans have been roasted, and therefore how acidic it tastes. Light roasts have been roasted the least and retain more of the beans’ original flavors and acidity, making them slightly sweeter. Medium roasts strike a balance between flavor and body, meaning there’s a smooth, balanced taste. Dark roasts have rich, smoky flavors with less acidity but a touch of bitterness that die-hard coffee connoisseurs tend to love.

Our house blends have two distinct roast and flavor profiles. Our House Blend M.D. (South & Central America) is a medium dark roast with a chocolatey flavor profile. It has beautiful notes of caramel and sweet cream, making for a cozy cup of coffee with a sweet finish.

Our other House Blend (Central America) is a medium roast. This one has floral and citrus notes with a touch of honey and clementine, making it balanced and bright with a slight acidic finish.

Once you’ve chosen your beans, grinding them fresh is crucial for peak flavor. Different brewing methods require different grind sizes—coarse for French press, medium for drip coffee, and fine for espresso—to optimize extraction and taste.

Grinding coffee beans to the right consistency is crucial for achieving the best flavor and extraction for each brewing method. Use a burr grinder for consistent grind sizes, which is crucial for even extraction, and grind your beans just before brewing to preserve freshness and flavor.

Now that you know the basics, let’s get into the different methods of brewing a classic black coffee at home with our Archies coffee beans.

French Press

The French press, also known as a press pot or plunger pot, is a classic coffee brewing method that dates back to the 1920s. It offers a simple yet effective way to brew rich, full-bodied coffee.

To get started, you’ll need a French press, a kettle for boiling water, and a coffee grinder.

  1. Begin by measuring your coffee beans and grinding them to a coarse consistency. The grounds should have a consistency similar to breadcrumbs. This coarse grind allows for a steady extraction during the long steeping process in the French press.
  2. Add the grounds to the French press and wet them with just a small amount of hot water to “bloom” the coffee, or release its aromatic flavors.
  3. Next, pour in the rest of your water, ideally heated to around 200°F (93°C), and let the coffee steep for about four minutes.
  4. After steeping, gently press the plunger down to separate the grounds from the liquid. Be careful not to do this too quickly to ensure the sediment from the coffee grounds does not get into your cup when you pour.

By following these steps and tips, you’ll enjoy a rich, flavorful cup of coffee that could earn you a spot on our barista team!

Drip Coffee

Drip coffee is arguably the most popular and convenient at-home brewing method known for its ease of use and consistent results. Utilizing an automatic drip coffee maker, this method involves hot water slowly dripping through coffee grounds and a filter, producing a clean and balanced cup of coffee.

To get started, you’ll need a drip coffee maker, a coffee grinder, and filters.

  1. Begin by measuring your coffee beans and grinding them to a medium consistency. The grounds should be slightly finer than coarse sea salt. This size ensures a balanced extraction in drip coffee makers, where water flows through a filter at a moderate rate.
  2. Place a filter in the coffee maker, add the ground coffee, and fill the machine’s reservoir with filtered water.
  3. Start the brewing process and let the machine work its magic.

With these steps and tips, you can enjoy a consistently delicious cup of drip coffee every morning.

Pour Over

Pour-over coffee is a manual brewing method that allows for precise control over the brewing process, resulting in a clean, flavorful cup of black coffee. This method involves pouring hot water over coffee grounds in a filter, allowing gravity to extract the coffee’s flavors as it drips into a carafe or mug.

To get started, you’ll need a pour-over brewer, a coffee grinder, filters, and a kettle.

  1. Begin by measuring your coffee beans and grinding them to a medium-coarse consistency. The grounds should resemble coarse sand. This grind size allows for a controlled extraction when water is poured over the coffee in a slow, circular motion.
  2. Place the filter in the brewer, and rinse it with hot water to eliminate any paper taste, and preheat the brewer.
  3. Add the ground coffee to the filter and create a small well in the middle.
  4. Pour a small amount of hot water (about 200°F or 93°C) over the grounds to bloom the coffee. This allows gasses to escape while enhancing flavor.
  5. After about 30 seconds, continue to pour the rest of the water in a slow, circular motion, maintaining an even saturation. A kettle with a gooseneck sprout is the best for precise pouring.

With practice and attention to detail, the pour-over method will give you a beautifully aromatic and flavorful cup of coffee that allows you to appreciate the unique characteristics of your favorite beans.

Cold Brew

Cold brew coffee is a refreshing and smooth brewing method that involves steeping coffee grounds in cold water for an extended period. Perfect for a hot summer day, this method results in a less acidic and naturally sweet coffee.

To make cold brew, you’ll need coarsely ground coffee, a large jar or pitcher, and a fine mesh sieve or coffee filters.

  1. Start by measuring your coffee beans and grinding them to a coarse consistency. This grind size prevents your coffee from getting too bitter.
  2. Combine the grounds with cold water in your jar or pitcher, using a ratio of about 1 cup of coffee grounds to 4 cups of water.
  3. Stir the mixture to ensure all the grounds are saturated.
  4. Cover the container and let it steep in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours, depending on how strong you like your coffee.
  5. Once the steeping time is up, strain the coffee through a fine mesh sieve or coffee filter to remove the grounds.

By following these steps and tips, you can enjoy a smooth, delicious cold brew coffee at home, perfect for a refreshing pick-me-up.

Enhancing Your Coffee Experience

Whether or not you drink straight black coffee daily, there are plenty of ways to add a little extra magic to your brew. Here are our barista tips for enhancing your coffee experience at home:

  • Use quality, filtered water to eliminate impurities that may affect the taste of your coffee.
  • Be sure to properly store your coffee beans in an airtight container so they maintain their freshness and flavor.
  • Experiment with different coffee-to-water ratios so you can get stronger or milder cups with your favorite blends.
  • Don’t be afraid to get creative! Add a splash of vanilla syrup, a sprinkle of cinnamon, or a dash of cocoa to transform your classic black coffee into something more fun.

At Archies, we aim to enhance your coffee experience with our wellness enhancers. You can choose to add doses of CBD or THC to any of our cafe beverages. For example, including a dose of CBD in a cold brew helps to reduce jitters, stress, and/or anxiety.

The best part is we sell the water-soluble CBD and THC in bottles for you to take home so you can enhance your coffee even when you make it at home. You can add our cannabis and CBD products to any beverage or food; they blend seamlessly and don’t change the taste at all!

You can also add other enhancers, such as a Power Up (Caffeine boost), Immune Booster, Local Allergen Shot, and Collagen Peptides.
